Itinerary Overview

This six – night luxury Bhutan itinerary introduces the traveler who has a limited time to see Bhutan. This itinerary can be combined with visiting India and/or Nepal.

Day 1 Thimpu

Arrive Paro, Bhutan on Druk Air or Bhutan Airlines. After formalities at the airport are completed, a representative will meet you. Transfer to Thimphu, the capital city, with a population of about 120,000. The drive is 60 kilometers and takes about 1 hour.

After checking into the hotel and depending on the time, you can take a walk on the streets of Thimphu to familiarize yourself with Thimphu or begin sightseeing of Thimphu.

Day 2 Thimpu

After breakfast, enjoy sightseeing of Thimphu that offers a wide choice of sightseeing. Places of interest are listed below. There will not be enough time to visit all listed below.

Visit Dupthop Lhakhang, better known as Zilukha Nunnery. This place is located on the face of a hill. From here you have a panoramic view of the Royal Secretariat, Royal Thimphu Golf Course, Parliamentary building, and the northern part of Thimphu Valley. This is a good place to take photographs.

Visit Memorial Chorten (stupa) built by Her Majesty the Royal Grandmother in 1972 in memory of His Majesty the Third King who passed away in 1972.

Drive to the statue of the seated Buddha at Kuenselphodrang. This statue, perhaps the largest seated Buddha in the world, sits on a face of a gentle hill overlooking the valley of Thimphu.

Visit the Royal Textile Academy. Bhutan is well known for its finest hand-woven textiles with intricate designs. This academy was established under the Royal patronage of Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck.

Visit the School of Fine Arts: This is the school where artisans are trained in different skills.

Visit the Folk Heritage Museum, a typical farmhouse setting, that shows how Bhutanese people live in remote villages.

Visit the Institute of Traditional Medicine. Bhutan is known as the land of medicinal herbs. Traditional medicine is practiced in close collaboration with allopathic medicine.

Visit the Zoo to see the Takin, the national animal of Bhutan. Takin is a strange animal that has a head of a goat and a body of a cow.

Visit a traditional handmade paper factory.

Visit Tashichho Dzong.

Day 3 Punakha

Drive up through 10,000 feet, surrounded by Himalayan peaks, and stop at Dochu-la Pass to admire the chortens and prayer flags. Visit Semtokha Dzong, “the place of profound tantric teaching,” before arriving at your hotel. In the afternoon. Hike to the nearby Chimi Lakhang, a temple, dedicated to the “Divine Madman,” a 16th-century eccentric monk.

Day 4 Punakha

After breakfast, hike through rice fields along the banks of the Mo Chhu River to the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, a stunning monument consecrated in 1999. Drive past several winter homes of the royal family before reaching the impressive 17th century Punakha Dzong. A picnic lunch will be served on the banks of the Punak Chhu.

Day 5 Paro

Your tour to Bhutan continues as you experience the wonders of this valley, from Ta Dzong, the National Museum of Bhutan, to the 17th century Rinpung Dzong, the “fortress of the heap of jewels.” Later, visit the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the most sacred shrines in Bhutan. Visit a traditional farmhouse for an opportunity to interact with a local family and learn something of their lifestyle.

Day 6 Paro

In the morning, hike to Taktsang Monastery, known as the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. It is believed that Guru Rinpoche, founding father of the Bhutanese form of Mahayana Buddhism, arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated at this monastery. Visit Drukgyel Dzong, built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to commemorate his victory over the Tibetan invaders. On a clear day, there is a splendid view of Mt. Jomolhari from the approach road to Drukgyel Dzong.

Day 7 Depart Paro

Transfer to the airport to catch your flight home.
