Itinerary Overview

Visit Java and Bali for 9 – nights. Visit Prambanan, a complex of Hindu temples, Borobudur, a spectacular Buddhist monument, Candi Pawon Temple, Mendut Temple, Gunung Kawi Temple, Goa Gajah Temple and Kraton, the Sultan’s Palace. If the weather allows, Penanjakan provides a beautiful sunrise view. Visit Tirta Empul, a holy spring temple, where Balinese Hindus go to for ritual purification. In Tunjuk village, you visit an elementary school and communal farm.

Day 1 Yogyakarta

Upon arrival at Adi Soecipto International Airport, meet the representative who will transfer you to your hotel in Yogyakarta.

Your sightseeing transfer from the airport to your hotel in Yogyakarta will take around 4-5 hours.

On the way, visit the Prambanan Temple. The Hindu temple of the “slender virgin”, also known as the complex of Lorojongrang, was erected in the 9th century while Java was ruled by the Hindu Sanjayas of Old Mataram. It consists of 3 major temples/shrines in the main area dedicated to the Hindu Gods such as Candi Shiva Mahadeva, Candi Brahma and Candi Vishnu. Enough time Is given to walking around and observing the beautiful carvings and the neighborhood shrines such as Candi Plaosan and the Candi Sewu. The Ramayana story is carved into the walls of the temples.

Afterwards, proceed to your hotel for check in.

Day 2 Yogyakarta – Magelang - Yogyakarta

After breakfast, drive to Magelang and visit Borobudur Temple, the world’s biggest Buddhist monument complex, which was built around 800 A.D. Looming out of a patchwork of green paddies and swaying palms, this colossal Buddhist relic is one of the continent’s marvels. After the decline of Buddhism and the shift of power to East Java, the monument was abandoned soon after its completion. For centuries the complex lay forgotten, buried under layers of volcanic ash. Climb up to the top and enjoy a wonderful view of the Menoreh Mountains. Enough time is given to stroll around the complex and to discover its beauty. Afterwards, continue to visit the nearby temples such as Candi Pawon and Candi Mendut before returning to your hotel.

Day 3 Yogyakarta

After breakfast, enjoy a cultural tour of the city. Visit Kraton (Sultan’s Palace) where you will understand the history of this artistic city. It was built in 1756 by Sri Sultan Hamengkubowono I. The palace is a model of traditional Javanese architecture. Kraton still serves as the Sultan’s Palace. Visit Tamansari which means “Fragrant Garden”.

In the afternoon, proceed to the historical sites of Kotagede. Explore the city by traditional transportation on an old-classic bike. You will have an opportunity to get close and interact with local people. The tour starts with a visit to Bumen Village, Kembang Waru Bread Production and then continues to the traditional market called Pasar Gede or Pasar Legi. Along the way, visit one of the oldest mosques in Kota Gede and visit the Royal Cemetery where the first king of Mataram and his family are buried. Finish the day by visiting a Joglo, a traditional Javanese house.

Day 4 Yogyakarta - Tosari

Breakfast is at the hotel.

Today’s transfer by rail and road will take approximately 8 – 9 hours. It will be an early morning transfer to the train station for your journey to East Java by Sancaka Train (departing at 7:25am from Yogyakarta).

Arrive in Jombang / Mojokerto Train Station. Meet your driver and continue by car to Tosari (2 – 3 hours). Arrive at your hotel in the afternoon.

Day 5 Mt. Bromo – Ubud

At 4 am, you will be picked up by a 4×4 vehicle and will drive to Penanjakan viewing platform to witness the beautiful sunrise over Mount Bromo (if weather permits). The spectacular view of the range of volcanoes (Bromo, Batok and Semeru) is unveiled along with the rise of the morning sun.

Continue over rough terrain to reach the foot of Mount Bromo where you can climb the stairs to the crater.

Afterwards, drive back to the hotel for breakfast before transferring to Surabaya Airport for your onward flight to Bali.

Upon arrival at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, meet the representative and then transfer to your hotel in Ubud Bali

Notes:
There is a possibility to ride on horseback at Mount Bromo. However, this is not recommended due to the treatment of the horses.

This morning’s trekking is not suitable for people with walking difficulties.

The ideal time to visit Bromo is during the dry season, April to November. At any time of year, it is cold on these mountains and night temperatures can get down to around 2-5 Celsius. The Bromo Tengger National Park is a popular getaway destination for local tourists, so the platform on the peak of Mt. Penanjakan can be very busy during weekends and public holidays. For those wishing to avoid the crowds, it is recommended to go after 8am.

Day 6 Ubud

After breakfast, start a full day tour of the south west of the island. First stop will be Tampaksiring village to visit Tirta Empul, the holy spring temple. Here you will discover the bathing pools which are believed to have strong curative powers. On the hill behind this temple is a presidential guest house built by the late President Soekarno. On certain days, you will see many local people having a purifying blessing ceremony in the public pools.

Afterwards, continue to the Gunung Kawi Temple, Bali’s largest ancient monument consisting of 10 candi (shrines) memorials cut into the rock face.

On your way back to the hotel, visit the Goa Gajah temple, the Elephant Cave. Built in the 11th century, its grand entrance depicts entangling leaves, rocks, animals, ocean waves and demonic human shapes running from its gaping mouth.

Day 7 Ubud

After breakfast, depart to the west of the island to Tunjuk village where you will be introduced to the Balinese way of life. At Tunjuk village, explore a typical Balinese compound, in which the building’s size and position are carefully stipulated by age – old traditions. After a visit to the village elementary school (closed on Sunday and public holidays and school holidays), you will head to a communal farm where you will learn about planting rice and the various stages of rice cultivation.

Lunch is at the village.

Return to the hotel in the late afternoon.

Early evening, you will be picked up from the hotel and drive to Tanah Gajah Resort. Enjoy a wonderful evening of the Kecak and Fire Dance performance on the open stage. The Kecak Dance involves a chorus of at least 50 men. They sit on concentric circles around an oil lamp and chant. The sound they make is “cak-cak-cak”. Up to seven different rhythmical combinations of the chant are interwoven creating a tapestry of vocal sounds as the musical accompaniment to the dance. The performance is 45 minutes. Afterwards, enjoy the Balinese royal dinner at the hotel’s pavilion open air restaurant overlooking lush rice paddies.

Day 8 Ubud – Jimbaran

Breakfast is at the hotel.

At midday, you will be picked up from Ubud and will transfer for approximately a 1.5 – 2 hour drive to the Jimbaran Bay area.

Check in at hotel, the rest of the day is free at leisure.

Day 10 Jimbaran – Departure

Breakfast is at the hotel.

Morning is free at leisure until the check-out time (12:00 standard hotel policy). If you want, you can request a day room until 6pm.

At the appropriate time, transfer to the airport for your onward flight to your next destination.
